Though Design for manufacturability (also sometimes known as design for manufacturing or DFM) has been around for a long time, many people are unsure on what it really means. Wikipedia defines it as “the general engineering art of designing products in such a way that they are easy to manufacture. The concept exists in almost all engineering disciplines, but the implementation differs widely depending on the manufacturing technology. DFM describes the process of designing or engineering a product to facilitate the manufacturing process in order to reduce its manufacturing costs.”
The truth is a bit more complex; DFM is a process that starts early (the earlier the better) and never truly ends. Reviewing a potential issue in the design phase is the least expensive option to solve – or even prevent – many issues related to a products manufacturability.
